Richard Johnson

Los Angeles based artist, Richard Johnson, aka Dick, is known for both abstract expressionism and the element of recognition that lends itself to both detection and identification of the 'art within' that one has to work for. It is the discovery of the sometimes 'unrecognizable' elements of art that lends itself to revealing the inner soul of the viewer.

It is not the intention of Johnson to reveal the obvious by mere 'object recognition' but allow the process of discovery through the element of surprise. It is only when the viewer discovers for themselves those furtive essentials that are not immediately exposed, but are concealed within the surface. It is the under-painting of textures and brush strokes veiled in an almost clandestine manner that allows the viewer to connect with the painting.

It is this personal connection with the viewer that Johnson seeks; a connection that drives this artist to delve into psyche of each person willing to stand before a single piece of art and say to themselves, without reservations, "This is what I see", "This is what is revealed to me". When the viewer can make that leap without hesitation, it is then that Johnson feels the work really does "speak for itself".
