I was born in 1955 in Southern California. My family is of mixed Japanese, North African and European-American heritage. As an artist I am self-taught. My parents were both artists, and I was encouraged to paint and draw for as long as I remember, and selling my art as early as age 9.
While still at High School I was hired by Zox Studios, a thriving commercial airbrush studio in the San Fernando Valley. After graduating in 1972 I continued there until 1976 as head designer, supervising up to twenty other artists. From 1976 to 1984 I did freelance commercial art.
From 1984 I focused solely on Fine Art, working in various mediums: watercolor, oils, pastel, pencil and sumi ink.
I have had numerous gallery shows. I am currently exhibiting at Grey McGear Fine Arts, at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica, and the Noel Baza Fine Arts Gallery in San Diego. The work featured at these galleries is representational and figurative.
Much later in my career as an artist, in 1991, I began using large brushes with water-based paint, working with abandon on heavy rice paper. I found freedom, fluidity and honesty in this medium. Through pure moments of absorption, play, happiness, anger, frustration, or focus, a piece can come mysteriously to life.
Steven Covey says "Live out your imagination, not your history" My work is a way for me to engage directly with my imagination, and leave behind, if only for moments, the burdens of history. It is not to deny personal history so much as to illuminate it - through the perspectives of the inner world of imagination, deep emotion, dreams and a vision for what is possible; beyond peace and war, deception and oppression.
I have practiced and taught Vipassana and Zen meditation, the non-violent martial arts of Aikido and Iaido sword, improvisational Performance Art based on the work of the legendary Scott Kelman, Hypnosis and NLP for over three decades.
I am cofounder of Five Changes and Manzanita Village Retreat Center in Southern California. I have worked with high risk youth, prisoners, social activists, as well as in organizations and schools. I work with individuals as a mindset and leadership performance coach and I facilitate workshops and retreats throughout the US.
