"I have a powerful feeling of the intangible and of freedom when I work.
The aspect of the many layers plays into the mystery of suggestion rather than any categorical statement and I am never quite sure what will be present on the panel by the time I feel it is finished. This creates the element of surprise for me and is also an expression of the infinite complexities that I continually find surrounding me. It is only with perseverance and patience that I manage to cull this vivid chaos into a freer yet more peaceful surface that I call my finished artwork.
I was born in England where my artistic sense was ignited by a Russian family of artists and musicians. I have studied and worked at the studio of Kai Von Baudissin in Paris, at The Anschel Gallery in London, at The Brentwood Art Center in Los Angeles and at The Tom Wudl Studio in Los Angeles where I worked as studio assistant to Tom Wudl. Now I live and work in Los Angeles.
Many artists fascinate me and some have particularly influenced my work including the emphatic, gestures of Cy Twombly, the exploration taking place in the Raucshenburg pieces and the emotional pull of the color in R. J. Kitai’s work.
The variety of media I have worked in includes, pottery, book making, woodturning, sculpting, assemblage with found objects, print, photography, collage, airbrush, oil and acrylic on canvas. Now I combine some of these experiences into one art form; at present I work on painted wood with laminated, painted and sculpted paper. The paper is fascinating in its combination of fragility and resilience, I find the wood is dependable, strong and almost vain in its possibilities; the paint is just flagrantly opulent. I randomly sand all multiple times, working in several layers, manipulating the texture, color and composition until I find a surface I like. Then I apply a final, detailed layer of acrylic paint. Sometimes I use metallic leaf for highlight.
My work has been shown in galleries including: Le Centre d’Art, Montreux, Switzerland; The Weisman Gallery, Malibu, California; Expo Amitie, Los Angeles, California; The Don O’Melveny Gallery, Los Angeles, California; Gallery 825, Los Angeles, California; VIVA Gallery, Sherman Oaks, California; Fresh Paint, Culver City, California; The LACMA Sales and Rental Gallery, Los Angeles, California; The American Juried Art Salon; Projekt30, New York City, New York, The Lark Gallery, Santa Monica, California and Abstract EXPOsure Gallery, Nevada.
My art pieces are in numerous private and corporate collections in Copenhagen, Montreux, Paris, London, Boston, New York and California.
Exhibitions with The PPAA, California (Pacific Palisades Art Association) awarded me First and Honorable Mention prizes.
